Military To Increase ... It's About Time

Today, President Bush announced that the size of the US Military will increase. I say ... what took you so long?

We cut back on the military too far in the 90's. I understand we were trying to achieve a peace dividend after the end of the cold war ... but I think we cut back by a couple of divisions too far.

Many will say that the only reason for the increase is so that the US can pour another 30,000 troops into Baghdad in a last ditch attempt to quell the partisan fighting that is making the city unlivable. While I think the likelihood of that happening (though I'm unsure of the number of troops) is very possible, we would need the increase in the military anyway. Right now, the majority of our combat troops are on a cycle of 1 year deployed followed by a year at home, then back for another year. This can get old real quick ... besides being a strain on military families.

This increase in the military will also relieve some of the stress on our Reserve and National Guard Troops that have been doing an admirable job ... balancing deployments to the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq with fighting natural disasters and helping out the Border Patrol on our Southern Border.

I will say this ... rather than deploy more troops to Baghdad, let's send them to Afghanistan to kill Osama (even if he is in Pakistan). Nothing would make me happier than seeing pictures of his dead body on the nightly news.

How would you like to see the additional troops used?

A) In Baghdad ... to try to quell the Sunni-Shiite fuss.

In the US ... providing much needed relief to both our active-duty and reserve forces.

C) In Afghanistan/Pakistan ... hunting for Bin Laden's head.

What I would like to do to Bin Laden once he's been captured, is too horrid to be on the world wide web (and remember you can see some very horrid things here). Thanks for stopping by.

Iraq has to be solved...the quicker it's self-sufficient, the quicker all the troops can be reallocated as needed, be it for Bin Laden, or relief or peacekeeping. This is true for the US as well as Canada, UK, all the countries involved in their respective roles in the middle east.

Iraq does need to be solved ... problem is the Iraqiis aren't helping too much. The Iraqi government needs to grow some balls and disarm the militias. While this may sound simple, I realize that it will be extremely difficult. That's why they have to start now ... while they still have coalition troops to back them up. And you are right, too much is being done by too few ... we need our allies to start pulling their weight in the War On Terror. Thanks for stopping by.

I thought we wanted the military to get into better shape. why would our president want them to get bigger?

rm_pchamp012004 replies on 12/21/2006 7:18 am:
Vanna, nice to see you back. How was your time with koocnachtiek?

You can have both a larger and better army ... the two aren't mutually exclusive. We need a larger military because as the world's only true super-power, our obligations right now exceed our abilities to respond to them. Some of this was brought on by ourselves, but most of it was brought on by the petty despotic dictators of the world, as well as a man hiding in a cave in Afghanistan/Pakistan. We didn't start this fight ... but we need to end it.

pffffffffffft

if you don't think this is all about a last ditch effort to enhance his "legacy"...........well

and his legacy so far?

higher unemployment
astronomical debt
loss of world approbation for our country
christian values forced on and in the courts

need i go on?

well, finally, seems like we're at odds again - grins
i was getting scared there for a moment

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

rm_pchamp012004 replies on 12/21/2006 9:22 am:
Legacy?

The president that was most concerned with his legacy was William Jefferson Clinton. Isn't that why he sent his former National Security Adviser into the National Archives to steal classified documents about Clinton's anti-terrorist actions prior to the 9/11 commission hearings. What legacy killing info was he trying to hide?

And wow, I finally found you in a statistical error.

The unemployment rate is lower right now than at any time during the Clinton Administration. We are currently at 4.5% unemployment (5% is considered full employment)

We do have some bad deficit spending ... but then again, we didn't have Katrina and the war on terror during the previous administration. That being said, fiscal responsibility is not one of the President's strong suits.

World approbation ... good word by the way, not many know the meaning, let alone are able to use it in a sentence ... I could care less about winning the world's praise. I also happen to feel, from living overseas for 7 years, that often the feelings of world leaders don't match what their citizenry are feeling. I remember a German girl being shocked at finding that her father was rooting for Reagan's re-election. Her father always voted for the Liberal Party. His feeling was that he wanted a strong Conservative leader in the US ... he felt that was what the World needed.

WE ... hello ... this country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, we are not trying to force anything ... though there are people trying to force their will on the citizens of the United States ... they are called ... Progressives

Ahhh ... very refreshing being on different sides again.

I've decided that starting for the new year this will become an edumactional Blog we will be starting classes on civics and first up ... The Bill of Rights. Don't worry, it will still be controversial.

I wish the military would have gone in hard and fast and taken care of things quickly and gotten out. There is no reason for this whole thing to drag on the way it is, other than it's on Bush's agenda.

Now, on a lighter note ...

The President's agenda was to establish a solid democracy in Iraq. His reasons were two-fold, firstly, we have never had a war with another democracy and secondly, that a democracy in Iraq would influence the people of Syria and Iran and maybe start a domino effect where the entire mid-east would go from totalitarian rule to rule by the people. It was a noble goal ... but we made some errors

Since I was so opposed to waging war on Iraq (from the beginning - not just when it became fashionable) it's difficult for me to answer this. What I wish is that INSTEAD of starting (yes, starting) a war with Iraq, we would have done whatever was necessary to ferret out bin Laden. Force, intelligence, strategy - whatever it took.

As it is, it reminds me of a not so funny version of the old joke - a woman is looking around the sidewalk on 4th St. A man asks her what she 's doing and she tells him she's looking for her earring that she thinks she dropped on 3rd St. When he asks why she's looking on 4th St instead of #rd, she replies that the light is better on 4th St.

And in case you think my vehement opposition to ever going to Iraq in the first place is based on some sort of lefty pinko kumbaya thing go look up Gary Hart's plan for the military, from his pre-self demolition presidential bid days. Now THAT was a plan...

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Too bad about the "Monkey Business"

No kidding. And what made me freakin' nuts was that he DARED the media to follow him. It was either the pinnacle of hubris or stupidity, never really decided which. The further irony is that the man is brilliant. Sigh...

Hart was pretty far to the left on some issues, but moderate on more, and really sharp regarding military strategy, from what I could see.

Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

I was amazed when I read his book ... actually I was still in the Military, and it was prior to Desert Storm, so it must have been in the 80's.

If you think about it, some of the things that he espoused in his book, Donald Rumsfeld has brought into play.

Hmmm....my first choice would be Afghanistan....agree with you that getting Bin Laden is more important.

However, seeing as we seem to be mired in Iraq, I would support sending the additional troops there, if it meant that some of the troops who have been stuck over there too long, away from their families, could come home....

Too bad there is no way to do all three ... unless of course our coalition partners and NATO would do their part. I'm not counting Poland and England among the shirkers.
