Getting Sleek And Sexy: 25 LBS. To The Goal.

I'm going back on my diet and exercise routine to finally lose the last bit of weight I need to lose. Who's with me?

Not many people know this, but once upon a time, I used to be pretty heavy. Not huge, but I was about 250 lbs. At 5'9" and with no workout routine whatsoever, that made me a chubby fella. About 4 years ago, I joined the Army National Guard, who basically told me to either lose the weight, or get kicked out. I needed my college money. I chose to lose the weight.

For two years, I had zero luck. I cut out sodas and sweets, which helped me stop gaining weight, but didn't do much for losing it. I tried six different diets in those two years, and didn't lose a single pound. I started walking (I can't run, thanks to bad knees)... still didn't lose weight. The Army was staring daggers at me, and they told me flat out: if I didn't show significant progress VERY soon, I would be kicked out and lose my college money, my bonus, everything.

I was desperate. I didn't know what to do, I'd tried everything I could think of. Then one day, a sergeant who also struggles with his weight comes up to me and says, "Soldier, if you're serious about losing your weight and passing your physical training, come to the gym tomorrow, and I'll train you personally."

Well, hell. I was willing to try anything. I actually expected to get exercised into the ground, but if it worked, I'd do it. But it turned out, that sergeant turned it around for me. He showed me how to count calories and eat the kind of foods that don't put on weight but are still healthy. He showed me how to start pumping iron and working the weight machines, and put me on an elliptical machine for an hour a day. It was a solid workout, but it wasn't some pure insanity workout that made me want to kill myself everyday. In fact, I actually was feeling pretty damn good. And of a bitch, it worked!

Six months and 60 pounds later, I was down to 190 and actually had some definition for once in my life. Technically, I was still over the maximum weight for the Army, but my body fat had gone down so much that they determined that it was muscle that put me over the weight limit, not fat... I passed. That, plus the extra exercise I was doing, and I also passed the physical training with flying colors. I was extremely proud of myself.

Now, something many people don't know is that once you lose a large amount of weight, the best thing you can do work on maintaining that new weight. That way, your body gets used to being at your new weight, and it becomes much easier to keep the weight off. I still needed to lose 20 more pounds, but I had lost so much weight so fast that the Army doctors told me I needed to stop and allow my body to recuperate, or I would risk some fairly serious health problems.

So, for the last two years, I've maintained a 190 lbs weight, with occasional exercise and a moderate diet. But a couple of months ago... I noticed a bad trend. My weight was starting to inch its way up again. Well, fuck that! I've maintained long enough. It's time to rev up the weight machines and start eating rice cakes again... I'm going to lose the last few pounds. I've gained five pounds back, so I have 25 pounds to lose. Goal weight: 170 lbs.

No, this isn't going to become a diet blog. This is a challenge. I have 25 lbs to lose. Does anyone else have 25 lbs they need to lose? Because if you do, I want YOU to join me!

Diet and exercise is MUCH easier to do if you have other people doing it with you, encouraging you and comiserating with you. If you join me on this, we can help each other out, give each other tips, and burn this fat off our bodies.

I'm going to do this either way, but I thought I'd see if any of you were game. Who's with me???

I am on a mission to lose weight as well. I have 50 pounds I want to lose. I cut out the sodas and have started eating healthier foods. I ride my horse a few times a week and work with him daily. Then I walk with a friend a couple times a week. I have lost 12 pounds in the last 2 weeks. I know for me watching salt content also helps keep my weight lower. I need to get my ass back to the gym and do some weight traing a couple times a week as well.

Whoa, 12 lbs in two weeks??? That's a pretty serious weight loss, Carnal... let me just say "Congratulations!" and "You may want to slow down." My doctor panicked when I lost an average of 10 lbs a month, just be careful. But Go Carnalkissess! Lose that weight!

Lion I have 4 months to lose 20 of what I need to lose. I have not done anything super major other than cut out sodas and fast food.. I am eating every 2 to 3 hours but am making healthier food choices. I drink about 4 20oz bottles of water a day. I make sure I eat breakfast and my snacks consist of mostly fruit of cut up veggies. I think most of what I have lost is actually water weight. The doctor told me once we get the sleep apnea under control it should be easier to lose weight. I am still waiting on my prescription for the machine. They are now testing to make sure I am at the correct setting. The horse has been so good for me as I spend a lot of time with him and it helps keep me active. Also my male friend is super supportive and stays on my ass about staying healthy but he does it in a good way.
Finding out why you over eat is the biggest issue so you can work on that as well. I am an emotional eater. Food is something that wont ever leave me.

4 months to lose 20 lbs? You can do that, no problem! Sounds like you've got a healthy diet and you're staying active... that's the key! Yay, Carnal! Go girl!

If I could weigh in...bad pun...after a three year hiatus, I'm back in the gym with a vengeance..and the following are key points that work for me:

Firstly do it for yourself, no one else, dont let anyone else undermine you, not kids, work, family, partner, etc

Be happy with yourself first

I dont like diets, prefer to eat clean; cut out pop, sugars, processed food, but hey I like my bacon, butter on toast, but in moderation and no I dont have a cheat day

Any extra cardio you can get in first thing in the morning consuming nothing but a class of OJ will burn fat stores

Strength training should be a key part of anyone's work out - no ladies you will not "bulk up" - folks, esp late 30+ do not realize that strength training will build new muscle, muscle consumes more calories at rest, preserves muscle tissue that naturally decreases with age, improves bone density and cardiovascular health

Do cardio after strength training

Do polymetrics - awesome for sneaking cardio, core, and strength in the same workout as well as preserve fast twitch muscle fibers

Compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, dumbell lunges, shoulder press are the best

Write down what you do every time you work out - your brain will always give out before your body does - if you dont write it down you can not push yourself for one more rep, one more minute

Exercise every day, even if its "play" ie bowling, tennis, kick a soccer ball or basket ball around, bike

Free weights are better than machines, machines tend to isolate and they do not help ancillary muscles ie bench press uses triceps, shoulders as well as chest muscles. Dumbells are better than barbells, back to ancillary/stabilizing muscles

Do your own research, do what works for you

If it were easy we would all be 2% body fat

Sex burns calories..

Best of luck to all you beautiful people, regardless of size

And the Travel_Couple gets the Gold Star! Excellent advice! I tend to power walk, lift weights, and do push-ups and sit-ups for my PT test the Army makes me do. I knew about the muscle-burning calories and the free weights... you'll notice on my HNW that I use them.

This is good stuff, people! Listen to Travel_Couple!
