Dealing with a Virus
Dealing with a Virus Somehow, My computer was attacked by some kind of virus. Almost all of my files would not execute because they were not compatable with my version of windows or because certain windows componants were missing. I could not get online because my netzero said that my windows did not have RAS installed???? I finally had to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows. Something is still flaky but it is getting better. I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed RAInBow |

It's probably spyware/adware shit. Viruses come in a lot more packages than they used to, now that the internet has been commercialized. Get Spybot Search and Destroy from Safer-Networking, outta England -- it's free off the net. Just make sure it's the one I pointed out. Some of the others are named similarly and they are a bitch! Could be that Conficker crap, too. Although, I think that is more detrimental as a backdoor for ID theft than as a machine-eater. RAS is Remote Access Service (or Server.) And practice safe computing, DP: Don't take no risk -- cap yer disk! Especially when on a sex-site. AFFland is one of the worst for adware. Solar...

You also might want to try MalwareBytes. It's another free download and I've found that it works wonders when removing adware/spyware installs and changes to the registry keys. Good Luck!

I had a computer die last week... *Sigh* I will miss most of the pics on that computer. LOL Of course that computer was purchased new in January of 2003 so it was expected to die any time. On the other hand... all it took to replace it was walking into another room and grabbing a different tower. Sometimes there are advantages to living with an IT professional.

I've missed you and was beginning to worry about you. Good to see that you are back. As much as I love computers, thankfully my brother is near and can fix most of the problems I run across.

Here's another endorsement for Ad-Aware, used weekly and my other favorite free computer protection, Avira Antivirus. I shouldn't jinx myself, but I have NEVER had a virus in over 10 years of computer use. I've had alerts and deletions. I Am FFE, and I continue to approve these messages [post 1930488]

ICDeadPeople2 replies on 4/7/2009 3:54 pm: Thanks for the input and endorsement. I need all the free help I can get ATM. Also, if you download the free virus/adware stuff, make SURE you remove the other stuff (Norton) or they fight with each other and viruses can sneak in. I wish I could say it more technically, but I think you get the idea. Good luck. I always check the reviews on cnet before I install any free software. I'm not an expert, but I think my luck is partially due to lots of research. Plus I'm cheap and I refuse to spend when there is perfectly good protection for free. . hihi (sorry) Fuck me runnin' backwards! I REALLY gotta get out more often... Glad you didn't kick the bucket, Bardner. Whats-his-face would be SO freakin' jealous. . . Been a while since they last let me out into polite society. Resurfacing, catching a breath, & catching up. And while I got my Broad-Brimmed Pimping Hat on, could I cajole all of y'all to Comment on, Alone In A Cloud? It's probably the best thing that I've written! Lately... .

Here's vote #3 for Spy-Bot. I used to do Ad-Aware as well, but the most recent version never downloaded properly, so I just go with SB Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

Waited a long time before switching to Windows Vista (still had 98 running on my computer). I figuered that hackers wouldn't bother making any more viruses for Windows 98. When I bought a new PC it had already Vista installed on it. Now I run a couple of programs for security (Norton Internet Security, NTI Backup, System Mechanic). I also make a monthly scan and defrag of my drives. I wish you a virus-free future. Life is precious but it's one of the few things we get for free. Enjoy it every second! My blog : cis72

My 10 year old Gateway just died a natural death. I had already sunk enough money into it over the years. Fortunately, I have generous relatives. They just got a new HP and gave me their 5 year old Dell. I was also given their printer. Mine broke a long time ago. Now I feel normal again. Good to see you are still here.

I have had to do that a few times...finally learned my lesson though and have a portable hard drive now to back up my files at least, unlike before... I hope everything is working for you now. LT

Sorry... not ROFL at your misfortune...just all this windoze non-sense. The Be All and End All of safe computing is Linux. Completely immune to everything by design, virtually uncrackable(except by a select few - literally only a handful of people on the planet) and utterly indestructible, even with the best-of-breed firewall switched off, even with un-updated software and even with a less than security conscious newbie at the wheel. And it's free to download and free to distribute. Go figure. Live, laugh, love and lead by example. - A Quiet Couch and Private Messages
