The three digits thingy is gone, and it's not a bug
The three digits thingy is gone, and it's not a bug What is Captcha? Remember those 3 digits you used to have to fill in before doing things like sending an email, posting a group topic, quoting a blog post? Those were called Captcha. Sites use captcha to make sure you are a human being and not a bot. You see these all over the web whenever you sign up for a new service. Where did Captcha go? If you are a brand new member, you will still see captcha. If you are a real member who has made enough posts, we turned off captcha for you. Why did we do this? To make it easier for you! This way you don't need to find those numbers and fill them out every time you send an email. The capcha will stay in effect for new members and on our registration, so you won't see any increase in spam. So go send some emails and enjoy your captcha free environment! |

You can basically get rid of it yourself. Just go to your account settings under Preferences and "Notification Bar Settings". Then check "no" to everything you don't want to be alerted about. You'll still see the alerts bar, but it will never alert you of anything unless you specified "yes" for that activity. I like the alert bar because I have shut it off for all but a very few things that I'd really like to be alerted about. And for those few things it's kind of nice to have. It sure makes posting easier. However, the site seems to be very found of kicking me off more than anyone, so I have to log in again and this normally "Activates" other tabs when I refreshed the page. Will the change means more double posting from me? I don't mind if it happens in groups where I'm a co-mod, I could easily delete it, but could be a tad annoying to my other groups who has to do the clean up for me.

Now that you have some kind of working system to see who are real members and who not, could you return the network invitation right to standard members, please Things get a bit difficult, for intance in Blogland, if the blog is 'friends-only' but neither can invite to join the network. I'm not a stamp collector, having only few people in my network, but sometimes would like to invite long-term friends on this site for other reasons too. Only universal or also in Scotland Where to start my day or is it month Of course I39ll change I39ll do whatever you like Heatseeking missiles Squirter's life

Hi, so how many posts do you have to post to get it to go away? I know I don't have near enough but I would still like to be aware of the number it takes. hornybitexan

Not to put a wet blanket on the whole thing, but if a new member only has to make something like three posts to get rid of the "captcha," what's to prevent a spammer from making those three posts and then spamming the devil out of the site? I sympathize with all those who applaud the removal of the "three-digit thingy," but REAL security would involve implementation of a graphics-based "captcha" to replace the old "three-digit thingy," not a complete removal of the requirement.

I always assumed the numbers were for security purposes--find and identify the person who physically threatens someone, or to confirm for site security the exact person with an exact response. But what do I know? Never really thought the captcha was a really hindrance to much of anything except bots which it was supposed to hinder. Have to say, by the by, having the captcha as a squiggly set of letters is a real hindrance to those of us visually impaired. To say nothing of being case or font sensitive.

Have to say, by the by, having the captcha as a squiggly set of letters is a real hindrance to those of us visually impaired. To say nothing of being case or font sensitive. . The problem is that an alpha-numeric code, like the old "three-digit thingy" is relatively easy to defeat with software...look for the characters "here" and duplicate them "there." . A graphics-based system requires fairly sophisticated software to interpret the graphics and translate that to alpha-numeric characters. That's not to say that such software cannot be written, or indeed, does not already exist, but simply that such software is required and is much more complex than that required by the old system. . The 4-digit graphics-based numeric captcha that was beta tested is probably good enough for A F F, but the squiggly letters and odd words to which you refer are icing on the proverbial cake...they make it even more difficult for graphics analysis software to defeat. .
