TS/TV/TG and Crossdressers

Recently we added Crossdresser to the classification of TS/TV/TG. We understand that this is offensive to the community and we are taking it down.

We apologize for this, and are currently taking turns shaming the engineer responsible for the change.

We'll get it corrected shortly. It's bug# ACCT-1828 for those of you who are following along at home.

Well obviously I was shocked, it was totally off the scale...er... alright, nope. Not seeing it, cos I am not part of their community, but I would love to know why it is offensive for them... anyone?

A transvestite is, by definition, a crossdresser.

They may also be transsexuals, in that they may feel that they are truly the opposite gender of their birth gender, though they may or may not choose (or be able to afford to) to transition physically to the opposite gender, or they may choose some body reshaping, but not other. The 'bottom' surgery on F2M transexuals, for example, is often not terribly successful at creating a realistic or functional penis; many f2m transsexuals choose not to(see Buck Angel).

Or they may not. Separation of the categories of transvestite and crossdresser is inaccurate and can be seen as creating false divisions, or attempting to classify one group as 'better' or 'more manly' than the other.

I don't know what the objection was, though, these are some of the possible reasons it might have been offensive.

"In its purest form, transvestitism means the same as cross-dressing. Some people make a distinction between dressing for sexual stimulation (transvestitism) and dressing for stress relief or non-sexual enjoyment (cross dressing). Many people, however, use the words interchangeably.

There are several different categories of transvestitism:

fe/male impersonators, who dress as members of the opposite sex for a show

fetishistic transvestites, who are stimulated by dressing up in the clothing of the opposite sex

drag queens/kings, who dress with the intent to amuse or offend

shamen who cross-dress during religious/spiritual ceremonies

transvestites who dress only for an hour a week

transvestites who live almost full time dressed as women or men

In addition, there are people who combine male/female characteristics (such as a bearded man in a miniskirt and heels); they are often classified as "genderf**kers"." "

Perhaps it is the impermanence of the classification... you know 'crossdresser' has a bit of a weekender aspect to it where as 'transvestite' is more of a lifestyle choice? If someone told me that they were a crossdresser it would imply, to me, that occasionally they like to dress up in the clothes of the opposite sex, whereas a transvestite is someone who would do that on a daily, permanent basis....

T on a persons profile can mean many things but basically falls into (not to generalise, but to put it into layman's terms for the curious people) 3 categories.
Transvestite/ transgender/ transsexual
It's my understanding that these generally mean..(& yes these are loose terms to describe an array of very unique people)
Transvestite:
A gay , bi or straight man who enjoys (physically & sexually) dressing up in female clothes. Also known as cross dressers or CD's
Transgender:
A person who defines themselves as both sexes, has male & female parts & is happy & content being both with no inclination to go for surgery to change either part. These people also are know & some are happy to be known (from my understanding) as Shemales.
Transsexual:
Females (mind, heart & soul) born into the wrong physical body. People who have known from their earliest memory (3, 4 or 5 yrs old) that the physical gender they were born into isn't the correct one. Their wish or goal (when life & circumstances don't get in the way) is to have gender-reassignment Surgery (commonly known as a sex change) to cure this PROVEN MEDICAL CONDITION.
As with any person on the planet, transsexuals can be straight (opposite sex only i.e. men) bi (self explanatory) or lesbian (same sex only i.e. women) & of course lots in between, bi curious, asexual yadda yadda yadda...The same applies for female to male Transsexuals.

The problem arose because everyone under the T category had crossdresser applied to their profile.

Ok Baby sis got it mostly right. here are the definition of the transgender terms most widely accepted throughout the transgender community. Definitions of Transgender Labels, all the engineers of this site have to do to know what is what in the transgender community is to visit the transgender groups on this site and they can see for themselves what terms are and aren't acceptable in the community.

I think maybe some definitions are in order here. These are from the glossary of a major medical insurance group. They seem to be fairly accurate and straight forward. Transvestite is not the preferred term anymore.
Cross-dressers (CD)- People who wear clothing, jewelry, and/or make-up not traditionally or stereotypically associated with their anatomical sex, and who generally have no intention or desire to change their anatomical sex. Cross-dressing is more often associated with men, is more often engaged in on an occasional basis, and is not necessarily reflective of sexual orientation or gender identity. Cross-dressing may be engaged in for numerous reasons, including a need to express femininity/masculinity, artistic expression, performance (e.g., drag queen/king), or erotic enjoyment. In the case of persons coming to terms with their gender dysphoria, they may start wearing clothing that matches their gender identity, which some people mistakenly say is the “cross-dressing phase” of their coming out process. These people are not cross-dressing and, therefore, should not be referred to as cross-dressers, because they are wearing the clothing that matches their gender identity. “Cross-dresser” should be used instead of the term “transvestite” (which is considered pejorative).

Transgender (TG)-An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from their assigned sex at birth (i.e., the sex listed on their birth certificates). Some groups define the term more broadly (e.g., by including intersex people) while other people define it more narrowly (e.g., by excluding “true transsexuals”. Transgender people may or may not choose to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically. While “transgender” is a popularly used word and generally seems to be a safe default term to use, some people find the term offensive as a descriptor of themselves. It is best to ask clients which terms, if any, they use or prefer. Use “transgender”, not “transgendered”.

Transsexuals (TS)- People whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth (i.e., the sex listed on their birth certificates). People who, often on a full-time basis, live their lives as a member of the sex opposite of their birth-designated sex. They may or may not (1) take hormones or have surgery or (2) be gender dysphoric. Use of the term “transsexual” remains strong in the medical community because of the DSM’s prior use of the diagnosis “Transsexualism” (changed to “Gender Identity Disorder” in DSM-IV). Some people suggest that “transsexual” includes only those people who are in the process of changing, or who have changed, their anatomical sex to align with their gender identity. In older writings, such people were referred to as “true transsexuals” when they had moderate to high intensity gender dysphoria. Some people use “primary transsexual” or “early transitioner” to refer to people who have not had a significant adult life in their birth gender because they started or completed their gender affirmations during their teen years (or earlier) or at the latest in young adulthood. These people also use “secondary transsexual” or “late transitioner” for those people who start their transitions after the age of 30. The distinctions mentioned in this paragraph have resulted in some very heated discussions and are considered offensive to many people. It is highly recommended that clinicians not use these terms unless their clients bring them up in discussions.
The term “transsexual” is hotly debated, and it is not certain whether people will use or reject this term. For some, it is disliked in the same way “homosexual” has become disfavored. Many people find both transsexual and homosexual pejorative. “Transsexual” is considered by some to be a misnomer inasmuch as the underlying medical condition is related to gender identity and not sexuality.
It is safer for clinicians not to use the term “transsexual” unless and until they are sure that it is a term their clients are comfortable with. When in doubt, clinicians should ask their clients which terms they would like the clinicians to use.

Transvestite (TV)- Previously used to describe a cross-dresser; now considered pejorative and outdated. See Cross-dressers.

I hope this helps, Chrissy

Confused yet?

The truth is everyone is unique & individual and no amount of labels will ever cover that individuality nor should they. The reason for the backlash was because the site took away the ability for members under the 'T' umbrella to define themselves as they see themselves.
